-Aminosalicylic acid is an analogue of p-aminobenzoic acid. It is an antitubercular agent. The sodium salt of the drug is better tolerated than the free acid.
Applications
p-Aminosalicylic acid has antibacterial properties. It is used to inhibit growth and multiplication of the tubercle bacillus.
Soluble in water (1 g/2 ml); sparingly soluble in acetone; practically insoluble in ether, chloroform or benzene. Sodium salt solutions is more resistant to heat than the free acid, but sterilisation by filtration is recommended.
