Spermine (N,N'-Bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,4-butanediamine)

Spermine is a polyamine involved in cellular metabolism found in all eukaryotic cells. Formed from spermidine through the addition of aminopropyl group to spermidine by spermine synthase. It is found as a polycation at physiological pH.

Mixed NMDA glutamate receptor agonist/antagonist at the polyamine site. Neuroprotective effects have been observed at high concentrations (1 mM), while neurotoxicity is observed at lower concentrations. It enhances agonist effectiveness at the strychnine-insensitive glycine site. Plays a role in cellular proliferation and differentiation; inhibits neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS).

Soluble in water (1% w/v), lower alcohol, chloroform; practically insoluble in ether, benzene, petroleum ether.

Caution: Research Use Only (RUO). Desiccate, store under nitrogen.
