Polyethylenimine is a branched chain polymer having a ratio of 1:2:1 of primary:secondary:tertiary amines with a branching site every 3 to 3,5 nitrogen atoms and a base structure of (CH₂CH₂NH)x. The nitrogen atoms must be protonated to achieve cationic charge, so the cationic charge density is pH dependent.
Polyethyleneimine is used for protein and nucleic acid precipitation, transfection assays, and to pretreat filters to increase the binding of proteins. Polyethyleneimine can also complex heavy metal ions. An effective permeabiliser of gram negative bacteria. Crosslinked polyethyleneimine is used as an enzyme carrier. Polyethyleneimine cellulose in small columns will separate cyclic nucleotides from related compounds at the same electrolyte concentration that is used for thin layer chromatography on Polyethyleneimine cellulose-coated plates.
Water soluble polymer used as a membrane lubricant; useful in filtering frozen cell membranes.
Caution: Research Use Only (RUO).
