Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Synonyms:
Quaternary ammonium compounds, benzyl-C8-18-alkyldimethyl, chlorides, Alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride
It has been reported that benzalkonium chloride inactivates HIV and HSV in vitro.
It is not effective against gram-negative bacteria or picornaviruses and it is not recommended for treatment of sanitising critical or semicritical medical instruments. Incompatible with anionic detergents, such as soap, and with nitrates. The preservative effect can be neutralized by the addition of Tween 80 and lecithin.
Soluble in water, alcohol, acetone; slightly soluble in benzene. Aqueous solutions are slightly alkaline to litmus and foams strongly when shaken. Composed of C12, C14, and C16 alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides. Approximate ratios: C12 (40%) : C14 (50%) : C16 (10%).
Caution: Research Use Only (RUO).
