Polyvinylpyrrolidone is a water-soluble polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. Typically used as thickeners, dispersing agents, detoxicant, complexing agent, lubricants and binders.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone is used as an emulsifier and disintegrant for solution polymerisation; also for production of membranes, such as dialysis and water purification filters; as an aid for increasing the solubility of drugs in liquid and semi-liquid dosage forms (syrups, soft gelatine capsules) and as an inhibitor of recrystallisation.
Complexes with phenolics and alkaloids for their removal from plant samples, thus preventing their modification of proteins and any interference they may cause in spectrophotometric determinations of protein content. This is also reported to improve stability of enzymes.
