Ferric chloride is a moderately strong Lewis acid and it is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis.
The vapor-phase co-reductions with other metal halides by hydrogen results in finely divided intermetallics with applications as structural materials or compounds with useful thermoelectric, magnetic, and oxidation-resistant properties. Ferric chloride is used in sewage treatment. It is also used as a leaching agent in chloride hydrometallurgy. The ferric chloride test is a traditional colorimetric test for phenols.
