Norfloxacin, pale yellow powder
Supplier: MP Biomedicals
Synonyms:
1-Ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-(1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic Acid
A synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and its’ mode of action is to inhibit DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thus
preventing cell division.
Norfloxacin blocks DNA replication by interfering with an ATP-induced structural transition of DNA complexed with DNA gyrase (topoisomerase). Mode of action: inhibits bacterial DNA replication. Antimicrobial spectrum: Gram-negative bacteria; less effective against Gram-positive bacteria.
Soluble in glacial acetic acid (50 mg/ml - clear, yellow-green solution). Soluble in octyl alchol (5 mg/ml), chloroform (5,5 mg/ml), acetone (5,1 mg/ml); slightly soluble in water (0,28 mg/ml - solubility in water is pH dependent, increasing sharply at pH < 5 or at pH > 10), methanol (0,98 mg/ml), ethanol (1,9 mg/ml) or ethyl acetate (0,94 mg/ml).
