Methylbenzethonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt that has a surface action similar to that of other cationic detergents.
It is generally germicidal and bacteriostatic and is most commonly used to rinse infant diapers and bed linen in the prevention of ammonia dermatitis. It has been shown to kill microorganisms, or prevent or inhibit their growth, and thus protect cosmetics and personal care products from spoilage. They also help to distribute or to suspend an insoluble solid in a liquid.
Methylbenzethonium chloride has been used in a study to assess stem cell death-inducing small molecules. It has also been used in a study to investigate the anti-leishmanial activity of paromomycin ointment (Leshcutan) combined with the immunomodulator Imiquimod.
Soluble in water (1 g/20 mL).
