Lecithin is the major membrane phospholipid in eukaryotic cells. It also serves as a reservoir for several lipid messengers.
Lecithin is used for preparation of vesicle suspensions commonly called liposomes or as monolayers. It is the source of the bioactive lipids lysophosphatidylcholine, phosphatidic acid, diacylglycerol, lysophosphatidylcholine, plateletactivating factor, and arachidonic acid.
A major structural phospholipid in brain, comprising approx. 15% of total lipid; primarily localized to gray matter.
Soluble in fat, paraffin, ether, ethanol, chlorinated hydrocarbons(100 mg/ml, CHCl3). Dispersible in water.
