Methyl cellulose is a chemical compound derived from cellulose. It is a hydrophilic white powder in pure form and dissolves in cold (but not in hot) water, forming a clear viscous solution or gel. It is used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products. It is not digestible, not toxic, and not an allergen.
Methyl cellulose is used as a substitute for water-soluble gums,to render paper greaseproof in adhesives,as thickening agent in cosmetics,as protective colloid in emulsions,as binder and stabilizer in foods,as bulk producer in the formulation of dietetic foods,Pharmaceutic aid (suspending agent),Laxative.
Soluble in cold water. Insoluble in hot water.
