An aqueous solution is best prepared by dispersing the granules in hot (but not boiling) water with stirring and chilling to +5 °C. The solution is then stable at room temperature. Presence of inorganic salts increases the viscosity.
Prepared from wood pulp by treatment with alkali and methylation of the alkali cellulose with methyl chloride.
