Dithioerythritol is an erythro isomer of 2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-dithiolbutane, and an isomer of 1,4-dithiothreitol which is a reagent for maintaining thiols in the reduced state; prevents oxidation of sulfhydryl-containing proteins during SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It also quantitatively reduces disulfides.
Dithioerythritol is used to prepare a matrix for fast-atom bombardment mass spectroscopy. It has been reported to be used in 2-D electrophoretic analysis of proteins and immunoglobulins, mitochondrial studies to block the opening of the transition pore and to study permeability transition, glial and neuronal glycine transporters have been investigated, utilised in a mass spectrometric mapping study of disulphide bonds in recombinant human interleukin-13.
Soluble in water (50 mg/ml - clear to slightly hazy, colourless solution).
