Description: Sodium pyruvate is used by cells as an easily accessible carbohydrate source. Additionally, it is involved with amino acid metabolism and initiates the Kreb′s cycle. The 100 mM solution should be diluted 1:100 for most cell culture. The use of sodium pyruvate in Wallen fermentation medium to enhance the conversion of oleic acid to 10-ketostearic acid by Bacillus sphaericus has been described. A protocol that uses sodium pyruvate to establish stably transfected human B cell lines has been published. It improves coliform recovery when present in culture medium.

Pyruvic acid is an intermediate in sugar metabolism and in enzymatic carbohydrate degradation (alcoholic fermentation) where it is converted to acetaldehyde and CO2 by carboxylase. In muscle, pyruvic acid (derived from glycogen) is reduced to lactic acid during exertion, which is reoxidized and partially retransformed to glycogen during rest. It improves coliform recovery when present in culture medium. It is involved in a metabolic regulatory pathway activated by mitochondrial oxidants. Pyruvate is involved in respiratory regulation in plants by interacting with alternative oxidase at a conserved cysteine residue. It may help prevent hydrogen peroxide mediated cell death.
Sodium pyruvate is utilized as a component in culture broth and media. Sodium pyruvate is used in Wallen fermentation medium to enhance the conversion of oleic acid to 10-ketostearic acid by Bacillus sphaericus. Sodium pyruvate has also been used to establish stably transfected human B cell lines.
Sodium Pyruvate has shown antioxidant properties and protective effects against oxygen radicals. Pyruvate is produced as part of glycolysis and is an intermediate in many metabolic pathways. It can be converted into acetyl CoA and enter the TCA Cycle.

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: RPMI 1640 medium was developed for culture of normal and neoplastic leukocytes, but also marrow cells and hybridoma cells.

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: Alpha MEM is a different formulation of MEM Eagle and contains a higher concentration of amino acids. It also has a higher concentration of lipoic acid, vitamins and pyruvate. Primarily it was developed for the cultivation of hamster kidney cells, but today it is used for a broad range of mammalian cells. Among others the alpha MEM promotes the growth and progeny of bone marrow cells in suspension culture and monolayer. A further possibility is the use as a separation medium or for the out-breeding of amniotic cells.

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) is a modification of Basal Medium Eagle (BME) which is Intrinsically developed for the cultivation of murine embryonic cells. DMEM is tailor-made for the cultivation of a broad range of cells, especially if the medium is supplemented with FBS.

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: This sterile medium is used for long-term cultivation of adult rat liver epithelial cells.

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: DMEM for SILAC is optimised for use with stable isotope labeling with amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) to analyse protein expression by mass spectrometry (MS).

Supplier: PAN-BIOTECH GMBH
Description: The IMDM is a modified DMEM, with a higher content of vitamins, selenium and amino acids. As it is supplemented with albumin, transferrin and soy lipids it can be excellently applied for culturing lymphocytes, marrow cells or hybridoma cells.
