Successful separation of polar substances - RP? - HILIC? - Carbon?
The analysis of polar substances is becoming increasingly important, but presents a particular challenge in HPLC.
The "universal column" C18 is only suitable to a limited extent for the HPLC separation of polar and hydrophilic substances. Often all kinds of "tricks" have to be used to achieve a good separation. Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) is a good choice for the successful separation of polar compounds. But is HILIC the same as HILIC? A whole range of stationary phases are grouped under "HILIC".
This presents a particular hurdle in method development. Another option is the use of "Porous graphitic carbon (PGC) particles" for the separation of polar compounds. This phase opens up unique possibilities in HPLC. This presentation will clarify the differences as well as the advantages and limitations of the various stationary phases suitable for the separation of polar compounds in order to facilitate the selection of the most suitable phase for the individual separation problem.
